Lecture with international expert and awarding of certificates for advanced level training

On February 21, 2019, NDC Skopje organized a lecture with an international expert in the field of intercultural education as part of the advanced level training for the Nansen model for intercultural education. Professor Steinar Bryn from the Nansen Academy of Lillehammer – Norway, who is part of the international team of trainers within the Training Center, lectured on topic “10 advices from a teacher to teachers”. At the same time, the groups 19, 20, 21, at the Training Center of NDC Skopje received the certificates for successfully completed advanced level training, thus completing the two year cycle of trainings.

Third advanced level training workshop with local expert

On 14th 15th and 19th February 2019, in the premises of the NDC Skopje Training Center, the groups 22, 23 and 24 of the advanced training level of the Nansen Model for Intercultural Education, attended the third workshop which was carried out by Prof. Elena Achkovska-Leskovska PhD, from the Institute of Psychology at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje. The topic of the workshop was: “Safe socio-emotional environment in school”, which was followed by various activities and discussions through which the teachers had the opportunity to share their experiences.

Training 28-31 January, 2019 – groups 22, 23, 24

At the end of January 2019, the second workshop for groups 22, 23 and 24 of the advanced level of Nansen Model Training for Intercultural Education was held at the Training Center of NDC Skopje. The topic of the workshop consisted of activities and discussions on the topic “Unbiased Approach in Integrated Schools”. During this workshop the trainers and teachers applied the main characteristics of the advanced level trainings, such as:

  • Interactive way of working
  • Bilingual approach
  • Working in small groups
  • Group discussion
  • Learning through solving problems
  • Role play

Training 21-25 January, 2019 groups 19, 20, 21

From January 21 to January 25, 2019, at the Center for Training of NDC Skopje, the fifth advanced level workshop of Nansen Model for Intercultural Education was held for the groups 19, 20 and 21 of the same level. The topic of the fifth workshop was “Intercultural approaches in the educational process” and it was carried out by Prof. Suzana Miovska Spaseva PhD, from the Institute of Pedagogy at “St. Cyril and Methodius” University, Skopje. During this workshop teachers had the opportunity to be part of different activities and share opinions on intercultural approaches in the educational process.

Training 10-17 December 2018, groups 22, 23, 24

From the 10th to the 17th of December 2018, the NDC Skopje Training Center welcomed groups 22, 23 and 24 from the advanced training level of the Nansen Model for Intercultural Education. These groups included teachers from the schools: PS “Krste Petkov Misirkov” – Radovish, PS “Goce Delcev” – Bitola, PS “Penestia” – Debar, PS “Toli Zordumis” – Kumanovo, HS “Gostivar” – Gostivar.

The topic of the first workshop was “Building Intercultural School Environment”, during which teachers and trainers together had the opportunity to fulfill some of the main objectives of the advanced level trainings.

The objectives of the advanced level training are:

  • Introducing the concept and idea for intercultural education and its distinctions and characteristics;
  •  Sensibilization of respect for diversity and otherness in the wider social environment;
  • Supporting constructive cooperation and interaction between teachers as well as educational institutions from different municipalities in the territory of the Republic of Macedonia;
  • Qualification for qualitative evaluation of the contents’ component in the books/literature;
  • Familiarization with positive examples and experiences on successful implementation of intercultural education;
  •  Development of the idea for intercultural education in Macedonian social context;
  •  Creation of standards for evaluating different types of intercultural activities.

Training 4-11 December 2018, groups 19, 20, 21

In the period from 4th to 11th December 2018, the groups 19, 20 and 21 of the advanced training level of the Nansen Model for Intercultural Education, in the premises of the NDC Skopje Training Center, the fourth workshop was carried out by Prof. Elena Achkovska-Leskoska PhD, from the Institute of Psychology at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje. Teachers and school principals from Nansen model school on a study visit to Northern Ireland

In the period November 20-23, 2018 a delegation consisted of NDC Skopje representatives, teachers and school principals from Nansen model schools participated on a study visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland. The delegation was welcomed by NICIE staff and attended a presentation organized by Ms. Paula Mcllwaine that presented the history and development of integrated education in Northern Ireland. During the visit, the delegation visited Forge Integrated Primary School where they were welcomed by the school principal, Mr. Neville Watson and the school staff. The group also visited Millennium Integrated Primary School where the school principal Mr. Barry Corrigan hosted a presentation and a tour of the school facilities. The teachers and school principals from the Nansen model schools had an excellent opportunity to get closely acquainted with the work of the integrated schools in Northern Ireland and the efforts that were made to advance the work of the schools throughout the years.

As part of the visit to Belfast, NDC Skopje Executive Director, Mr. Sasho Stojkovski held a presentation at the European Commission Office in Belfast about the history and development of the Nansen model for intercultural education and its impact on the overall education system in Macedonia. The presentation was attended by representatives of the education department, NICIE staff, Integrated Education Fund and teachers.

The delegation led by NDC Skopje was delighted to attend the celebration event “The Big Small Stories” as well as the promotion of the book “There Were No Desks” organized by the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education and hosted by NICIE CEO Roisin Marshall at Lagan College.

NDC Skopje wholeheartedly thanks NICIE staff as well as all friends and supporters from Northern Ireland for the continuous support over the years in the joint efforts to improve education by promoting interculturalism, integration and inclusion.

Nansen Dialogue Centre Skopje hosts international conference

On October 27, 2018 Nansen Dialogue Centre Skopje organized the International Conference on the topic “The Role and Importance of Interculturalism in Education”. The Conference was consisted of lectures from distinguished international experts who are part of the international team of trainers within the Training Centre. After the official opening of the conference by Ms. Biljana Krsteska Papic, Ms. Paula Mcllwaine from the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education presented the Program for anti-bias approach in integrated schools, while Mr. Steinar Bryn from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue, Norway presented the perceptions for intercultural education. The conference was integral part of the basic level training for intercultural and integrated education, organized and realized within the NDC Skopje Training Centre.

By utilizing the extensive experience and knowledge of the international experts from Northern Ireland and Norway, the conference had a significant role in the process of sensitizing of various educational profiles for the necessity and benefits of intercultural education as a global trend, tendency and necessity.

This event represented a great platform for public promotion of the Manual for Intercultural Education recently developed by Nansen Dialogue Centre Skopje. Ms. Sonaj Bilal NDC Skopje Coordinator for education, training and development presented the purpose of the manual.

The necessity and importance of intercultural education was also emphasized by Mr. Sasho Stojkovski, Executive director of NDC Skopje, Mr. Safet Neziri, State Advisor at the Ministry of Education and Science and Ms. Irena Spirkovska, from OSCE Mission to Kosovo. During the conference, NDC Skopje awarded Certificate of appreciation to Mr. Safet Neziri in appreciation of outstanding contribution and in recognition of the continuous excellence in support of the Nansen model for intercultural education.

At the concluding part of the conference, nearly 100 teachers from Macedonia and Kosovo were awarded certificates for successful completion of the Basic level training program for intercultural education.

Practical training modules- Nansen model for intercultural education

During the month of September, 2018 the teachers enrolled in the basic level training for intercultural education within the NDC Skopje Training Centre attended the practical modules of the training program for intercultural education. The practical modules of the Nansen model for intercultural education were organized in the PS Goce Delcev in Gostivar, whereas the model-integrated extracurricular activities were carried out by teachers Aneta Kaziovska and Mirushe Xhaferi. Through the practical modules and observation of integrated extracurricular activities, the teachers had the opportunity to learn more about the practical methods applied in the Nansen model schools and get more closely acquainted with the Nansen model. The teachers also paid attention to the efforts for building a welcoming and integrated ethos in the school that is reflected in the classrooms and other school spaces through various creative displays and products from activities.

Workshops for implementers of NMIE and project activities

In the period March-May 2018, the implementers of NMIE extracurricular and project activities, within the Training Center of NDC Skopje, attended workshops realized by prof. Dr. Hana Saliu from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tetovo. The workshops were composed of various activities and discussions on the following topics: “Empathy as a prerequisite for healthy communication” and “The need for developing critical thinking in multicultural societies”.
